Twister…Ride it Out was an indoor special effects attraction based on the 1996 film Twister, located in the New York themed area at Universal Studios Florida. It opened to the general public on May 4, 1998, and closed on November 2, 2015.
The attraction was hosted by Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, stars from the original film. Guests experienced a life-like encounter with a simulated tornado in the main show area which included water, fire, and the movement of objects across the stage among other audio and visual effects.
The ride was divided into two parts. The first part was a pre-show where guests learned about the science of tornadoes and watched a video of Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt filming the movie Twister. The second part was the main show, where guests were taken on a tour of a tornado research laboratory and then placed inside a simulated tornado.
Twister…Ride it Out was a popular attraction for many years, but it eventually closed down due to a number of factors, including the aging of the technology, the declining popularity of the film Twister, and the high cost of operation.
The attraction was replaced by Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2016. Race Through New York is a 3D motion simulator ride that takes guests on a journey through the streets of New York City with Jimmy Fallon.
While Twister…Ride it Out is no longer operating, it remains a fond memory for many people who visited Universal Studios Florida in the 1990s and 2000s. The ride was a unique and immersive experience that helped to bring the science of tornadoes to life.
